A good lit term that is in the book is foreshadowing.

1. Foreshadowing: the use of clues to suggest events that have yet to occur.

2. “If you happen to get in trouble lenny I want you to come right back here and hide in the brush.” pg. 15

3. I see in this part that George senses something is going to happen, like Lenny is going to screw up again. It kind of gives a clue that later in the book it will come back to them. George always tells lenny that he needs to stay out of trouble and he just cant do it. They lose jobs over him and George never gets to do his own thing.

4. Steinbeck is trying to put a sence of what might happen. Like the audience thinks something is going to happen but not sure if it will happen or when it will happen.

Another word is Parable.

1. Parable: A short story that tells a moral lesson of some kind. It has the following three chararistics.

       A. Its a short story.

       B. It has the moral that is revealed at the end.

       C. It uses realistic characters and settings

2. In the end it gives this. ” No lenny I aint mad. I never was, and im not now.” pg. 106

3. There is a parable in this story it has a moral in this story that tells you that its not always easy and you sometimes have to do what you dont want to do. Like how george had to take care of lenny. But he never got rid of him cause they were close. Even thought he was a hassle. He still took care of him.

4. Steinbeck puts this in his story to have a meaning. He makes it so it shows the reader about real life instead of other stories that are made up and not real.

Another would be the setting

1. Setting: Time or place of the action.

2. “Come on lenny, you big bastard, get up on your feet.” pg.62

3. This is whey lenny breaks curleys hand for harassing him and trying to fight him. They are in the bunk house when curley comes in looking for his wife and then he picks a fight with lenny. This is the partof the wtory when i thougt things were going to start going wrong. I thought curley was going to kill or tell on lenny for doing that and they would have to leave. but it didnt happen.

4. Steinbeck puts this in here to make some suspense and to help out the end of the book. Curley is already mad at lenny so he automatically thinks its him in the end of the story.

Allusion is a good word also.

1. Allusion: a reference to something well-known (like a person, place, event, or work of art or literature)

2. “Where we goin, George?” pg. 4

3. Allusion is a big part of this story telling about how lenny is. All steinbeck has to do is write the words down and people understand he isnt normal. Throught the book you learn that lenny isnt smart at all. He is like a kid.

4. Steinbeck uses this to use simple words to describe things. He uses it so say something without saying it so that people will understand.

And also the last one would be metaphor

1. Metaphor:

           A. A comparison where you call one thing something it is not.

           B. Using one thing to represent something else

2. “Hes strong as a bull.” pg. 22

3. Everyone refers to lenny as a monster like hes bigger then life. They say hes an animal. He is big and he dosent know how to use his strength or what it can do. But overyone says hes an animal because of how big he really is.

4. Steinbeck uses this to too the reader just how big lenny really is. Without coming right out and saying how big he is. He gives refrenses or images.

letter to sheehy

This year i have learned alot about myself and about what i need to do in school to get better grades. I found that i need to stop screwing around and get homework and studying done when i need to. Hand in homework when its due and be in class so i dont miss anything. This year went by pretty good although i just skimmed along. In english i liked reading the stories. Some of my favorites were “of mice and men” and “the crucble” i liked the storylike and they tought me a few thing also. Some things i didnt really like about this year was poetry. I dont really get into poetry and its just not my thing. Id rather be reading about wilderness and peoples lives instead of rhyming words all day. But we had to and i lived to see another day so its fine. Some things that motiveted me were baseball. You have to get good grades to play baseball. And thats my favorite thing to do in my spare time. Even thought i was hurt most of the year. But next year im looking to turn my grades and motvations around and get good grades and do what i neeed to do to get to college. A few things i can take with me are the story lines of a few books i read like of mice and men and and good man is hard to find. where you dont always get what you want and everything isnt always perfect but you have to live with it.  But too bad you didnt teach eng. 12. well cya in the halls next year.

mice and men chap 4-6

My response to the book is that things dont always go right for you. You want everything to go right but sometimes if just dosent. Like when lenny was in with his puppy and he killed him because he was going to bite him so lenny slapped him. Then curleys wife came in and they started talking and he told her “i like to pet soft things.” So she let him touch her hair and he got scared and he grabed on and wouldnt let go and she started screaming and lenny told her to not tell george. Unexpected things happen every day for a reason. Another is taking care of the people you love. Like george and lenny. At the end of the book after he killed curley wife he told lenny ” i was never mad at you lenny.” Cause lenny thought he would be mad. And inthe very end he ended up killing lenny. It wasent because he was mad or anything. I think like the dog part he would rather him do it then have curley do it and feel the guilt from it.

chap 3

May 16, 2008

The first quote is “Suppose i go in with you guys”? This part is where he trys to get in on theyre deal. Georges and lennys deal where they want to get the place. He tells tham that he will give then money to start the place and he will keep working getting money until they have enought to keep the place. They both think this is a good idea and agree on doing it. Its theyre dream and its coming true all they have to do is keep with the plan of sasying one more month to get paid.  Another quote is “Wheres she at” its curley looking for his wife. It thought in this part there might be a fight cause a few boys went out to the barn to tend to a horse. And i think curley might have thought she would be out there. But he left and went to the barn to look. And my laast quote is “You got enough senses to listen, you got your hand caught in a machine”. They tell this to curley so that he dont tell that lenny had crushed his hand and they dont get fired. Curley tryed picking a fight with him and he was beating him up until lenny grabbed his hand a broke it. A few questions are what is curley going to do about this? is he going to tell the boss or will he just keep quiet? And another is, is theyre plan really going to work or is it a lost hope??

chap 2

May 14, 2008

The thing that seem interesting about this chapter is that lenny is very attracted to the boses sons wife. She is a flirt and i dont know if lenny will be able to stay away from her. She teases all the boys and lenny isnt especially prone to avoiding that. I think he might try something with her to try to do something to her that she might take as a bad thing. Things that stand out are that lenny is getting into trouble with the bosses son. So he might get into trouble with him. Or even george might trying to do something about how cocky he is. He kept saying how much he hates him. That might also be a factor in the later parts of the book. Also lenny might get a puppy from one of theyre workers. And george told him that he will get hima puppy to play with and pet. Some things i think might happen is that they will get into a fight with the bosses son and get fired for it. Or lenny with do something to the girl and she will tell a lie about him like the other girl did. Also they might just stay on the ranch, not get in trouble and lenny withget the girl his puppy and both of them theyre dream.

Chap 1

May 8, 2008

So far it seems like its an interesting book. Usually if i dont like the book by the first ten pages i usually dont read it. That might be to my disadvantage but im not sure. They start out on a river or pond that they are staying the night at. There are two men one of them is small and defined and the other is an ogre with no features. The big one got in trouble at the last ranch they worked at so they had to run from the town and go somewhere else. They tooka bus and they dropped them off about four miles away from the ranch so they had to walk. And finally they came to the river. Lenny had something in his pocket and george told him to take it out of his pocket. It turned out to be a mouse. So George threw it to the otherside of the pond. They they wanted to make dinner so George told him to go get firewood and he walked away and heard him on the otherside of the river. And he got back with one stick and George told him to give him the mouse. Then after that they started a fire and made dinner and the last few things they talked aboout were if Lenny got in trouble again to come hide inthe bushes at the river. And then they talked about getting a place together and having all kinds of rabbits and mice and everything if lenny wouldnt get in trouble again. It kind of seems like hes ging to do something dumb again and get them in trouble or they might just lay low and work and get theyre dream of getting a house with animals and just live off theyre land.

Act 2 journal

April 17, 2008

My honesty helps a lot with my parents and friends. Even if i do something wrong if i tell the truth then i wont be in as much trouble and will still be trusted. Like one day i didnt go to baseball and i came home and my mom asked how practice was. I guess my coach called my mom and told her that i wasent there.  So i kinda realized that she knew i wasent there so i just told her i went to hang out with friends instead of baseball. She was mad but still she trusted me cause i told her. Unlike all the girls that think they saw the devil just to get out of punishment. Even tituba who lied was very suprised at how they lied. She was awstruck at how they could just accuse all those girls that they didnt like just to get them in trouble.

Act 1 journal

April 17, 2008

I use to lie a lot to get out of trouble. Like one day when i was young i was outside with my brother and i was playing baseball. My brother was pitching to me and i hit the window of my house and cracked it. I told my mom it was my brother cause i didnt want to get in trouble. But soon enought i got in trouble for the window and lying. Just like Abagail did to get out of her punishment. She told proctor that it was all sport but she told everyone else that she did see the devil. And people with him.

My naturlaism

March 12, 2008

I did my story because I like the jungle and what it has to do with theearth and its mysteriousness. I wanted to capture jack london in my story with naturalism because in the end the man dies from the unknown tribe in the african congo. I think you will like this story. So here it is—

It was very hot and humid on this day. The African Congo was always hot and humid. It rained almost every day and the heat never ceased to exist. “It was too hot to travel for help today, but if only I had taken the survival pack off the plane I would be able to have a knife and that’s all I need in the jungle. I could have stayed at the plane and waited for help” he thought. The knife or machete is the most important thing a man can have in the jungle. Without it, a man is nothing.   But I was not in a state of mind to think when the plane went down, but today the heat was almost too much to handle so I found one of many small creeks to sit in to cool off.  It would be dark soon and I really should be starting to make a make shift camp for the night. The camp consisted of maybe a fire if any dry wood could be found. A bed that was off the ground so the ants and snakes and all the things that will crawl up your leg in the night couldn’t get you. A few times I had made a bed in a tree off the ground. Didn’t get much sleep but it worked out. I was on my way again. It was early morning and it was already very hot. I came up on what I thought were foot prints. This meant that there would be people and help and I can go home, but as I looked closer they may as well have been monkeys or other animals that go in this trail. I have been alone for four days in the
Congo. Everyday I get weaker and weaker. I am not really sure if im going in circles. Or if I am getting myself more lost or farther away from civilization. It was almost dark and dead tired from walking all day. I sat on the ground to start a fire and thought to myself to just lay back and relax for a few moments. I woke up with my leg burning with a sensation of fire and needles stabbing me. I didn’t know why. It was unbearable to stand so I pulled up my pant leg and seen that I had a cut. The pain was getting even worse. Soon I was very dizzy and fell down. I woke up tied to a log about the size of my leg. Tied so tightly I couldn’t move my hands or feet. I looked around and seen no one. But there was something that caught my eyes. There were stakes in the ground about seven feet high…. With a little round balls on them. I wasn’t sure what it was. Soon I heard footsteps and two dark Indian looking men came in and picked up the log. I was hanging in the middle like pig about to be roasted. My leg still hurt very badly. But I got closer to the stakes and seen what was on them. They were little heads. About the size of a softball. The hair. And eye sockets. And teeth. Just very small. Then it hit me. They were headshrinkers. I only heard stories and legends that these people still lived. I mean it was 2009, people didn’t believe this still happened. There were hundreds of them. All on stakes and with there own features. The heat didn’t seen so hot when I seen a stump with red stains all over it. A cold chill came over me as I was put on the log. I was blind folded with a leaf or rag or something. My head was pushed down, and this is when I knew…. I had met my fate.
