final
A good lit term that is in the book is foreshadowing.
1. Foreshadowing: the use of clues to suggest events that have yet to occur.
2. “If you happen to get in trouble lenny I want you to come right back here and hide in the brush.” pg. 15
3. I see in this part that George senses something is going to happen, like Lenny is going to screw up again. It kind of gives a clue that later in the book it will come back to them. George always tells lenny that he needs to stay out of trouble and he just cant do it. They lose jobs over him and George never gets to do his own thing.
4. Steinbeck is trying to put a sence of what might happen. Like the audience thinks something is going to happen but not sure if it will happen or when it will happen.
Another word is Parable.
1. Parable: A short story that tells a moral lesson of some kind. It has the following three chararistics.
A. Its a short story.
B. It has the moral that is revealed at the end.
C. It uses realistic characters and settings
2. In the end it gives this. ” No lenny I aint mad. I never was, and im not now.” pg. 106
3. There is a parable in this story it has a moral in this story that tells you that its not always easy and you sometimes have to do what you dont want to do. Like how george had to take care of lenny. But he never got rid of him cause they were close. Even thought he was a hassle. He still took care of him.
4. Steinbeck puts this in his story to have a meaning. He makes it so it shows the reader about real life instead of other stories that are made up and not real.
Another would be the setting
1. Setting: Time or place of the action.
2. “Come on lenny, you big bastard, get up on your feet.” pg.62
3. This is whey lenny breaks curleys hand for harassing him and trying to fight him. They are in the bunk house when curley comes in looking for his wife and then he picks a fight with lenny. This is the partof the wtory when i thougt things were going to start going wrong. I thought curley was going to kill or tell on lenny for doing that and they would have to leave. but it didnt happen.
4. Steinbeck puts this in here to make some suspense and to help out the end of the book. Curley is already mad at lenny so he automatically thinks its him in the end of the story.
Allusion is a good word also.
1. Allusion: a reference to something well-known (like a person, place, event, or work of art or literature)
2. “Where we goin, George?” pg. 4
3. Allusion is a big part of this story telling about how lenny is. All steinbeck has to do is write the words down and people understand he isnt normal. Throught the book you learn that lenny isnt smart at all. He is like a kid.
4. Steinbeck uses this to use simple words to describe things. He uses it so say something without saying it so that people will understand.
And also the last one would be metaphor
1. Metaphor:
A. A comparison where you call one thing something it is not.
B. Using one thing to represent something else
2. “Hes strong as a bull.” pg. 22
3. Everyone refers to lenny as a monster like hes bigger then life. They say hes an animal. He is big and he dosent know how to use his strength or what it can do. But overyone says hes an animal because of how big he really is.
4. Steinbeck uses this to too the reader just how big lenny really is. Without coming right out and saying how big he is. He gives refrenses or images.
